Where are you from? Where are you based?

Originally from Stellenbosch, in sunny South Africa. I've been living in the Netherlands for just over 2 years now.

โ€

What led you to Memorisely, and how did you land a spot on the team?

I'm a lucky lady ๐Ÿ˜ One of my life-long friends, Anske, introduced me to Memorisely when the tribe started the Yoga and Mindfulness channel. This lead to joining the team to teach Bootcamp sessions and bi-weekly flows with the Membassadors.

โ€

How has previous experience impacted you and prepared you for this role both personally and professionally?

I've always had a great passion for working with people and spreading sunshine. I used to be a special needs teacher (not that that has anything to do with the folks at Memorisely ๐Ÿ˜‰) and have done my 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training. Since moving to the Netherlands, I've been able to work full time as a yoga teacher.

โ€

Talk to us about your experience working in a small, remote start-up environment?

I could never see myself doing a 'normal' 9-5 job. Nor would I call myself a business woman of nature. During the pandemic, more and more folks were turning to doing this online, so that was my big pull. What started off as a class with a couple of friends, has now grown into more classes and new friends joining in for yoga. I've also been working with the My Story Tribe (South Africa) and have done a couple of cool meditations and yoga videos for children. So, pretty much, a very organic start to my business.

โ€

Walk us through your typical day?

Coffee first. No screen-time during my morning routine - which helps me ease into the day, feeling calm and mindful. Then, I usually meditate โ€” in whatever form it happens to be. A quick shower and some breakfast. Then, it's off to the socials and some admin. A (usually nice and healthy) lunch, followed by a mindful break. After that I usually focus on my yoga classes โ€” whether that be practicing, planning, researching or gathering new music. Most of my classes are in the evenings, which usually means prepping dinner in the late afternoon. Off to teach, and then I wind down for the night.

What's your best advice for overcoming challenges in the workplace?

Do it, even if you're scared. Everyone started off 'small' and maybe a little stupid. Trust your gut (and take care of it ๐Ÿ˜‰).

Share your "can't live without" productivity tip or hack?

  • Clean-up as you go. ๐Ÿงน โ€” "Outer order contributes to inner calm" - Gretchen Ruben
  • Write effective and realistic to-do lists.
  • Make time to take time for yourself. This is really important!

โ€

Name one thing you recently learned that surprised you.

The Apple logo at the back of my phone can function as a short-cut button (you're welcome ๐Ÿ˜…).

Three pieces of advice for those seeking to implement more wellness during their UX/UI Design workday?

  2. Take time to reflect
  3. Use your support network

...no UX/UI expert, but just some general advice
