Where are you from and/or where are you based as a Memorisely student?

Currently based in Surrey, UK but originally from the magical land of the Isle of Man - where fairies aren’t just a myth and cats have no tails! It’s a beautiful place filled with endless sunsets and gorgeous coastal lines. Oh! - and did you know the whole island turns into a motorbike racecourse every year for one of the most dangerous racing events in the world?

What inspired you to pursue UX/UI and become a designer?

I have always had a passion in all aspects of design and couldn’t think of doing anything else. I graduated with an Animation Design degree and although I enjoyed it, I knew it wasn’t for me. After this, I swindled my way into Graphic Design which led to me discovering the world of UI design - and I loved it! To have a job in something you love is the goal and I can’t wait to up my knowledge in UI design!

Which Bootcamp did you choose to enroll in, and why?

I jumped into the UX/UI Bootcamp. I’d came across videos of Zander on Instagram by chance and just loved everything I was learning from his short reels and wanted more! I loved that Memorisely do small live classrooms, with a learn-by-doing approach. It’s not overcrowded and you are always encouraged to ask questions.

What's it like to be a student in Memorisely's virtual classroom?

It’s great. Everything is organised so smoothly in the course and it’s been great working with like-minded people who are just as enthusiastic to learn as you are. Nothing is too much trouble and if I have any queries, Zander and the team are always super keen to help and support!

What has been your favorite part of Bootcamp so far? What's one learning that has surprised you in Bootcamp?

The energy from Zander! It’s contagious and always gives me so much enthusiasm to learn more! The whole learning experience from the bootcamp has been such a great unique experience. The one thing that has surprised me the most is how important and time saving it is to get your components and styles set before cracking on with the prototyping.

What is the biggest challenge you face learning UX/UI Design?

Prioritising - you can often get carried away with a ‘great’ exciting idea and lose time on the more important things. What I’ve learnt so far is to ‘flesh out’ your prototype first and develop later on (time permitting).

What does a typical day look like for you as a student?

I usually force myself awake around 8:30 and make a beeline for my morning coffee and take a moment in the garden. I’ll check my emails and plan out my goals for the day. I try my best to keep active so I always aim at getting an hours workout in before noon. Once I’m showered and fuelled up I tackle my afternoons getting down and dirty with work whilst blasting the punk station! 🤘

In my evenings I love finding a comfy spot and doing some quirky illustrations on the iPad. Currently working on a psychedelic troll 🍄

What is your current workspace setup?

I love having an organised desk. Having a clear desk makes me just concentrate better and focus on the tasks at hand 😎

What are your go-to or "must have" apps?

My go-to apps would be Notion FOR SURE! Then Google Maps for getting around and Figma ofcourse 😊

What (digital or physical) product recently blew your socks off?

Notion - Coming across Notion has been an absolute game changer. I am a sucker for making lists and being able to have this all organised in one place is just amazing. I cannot recommend it enough!

What tunes do you listen to while designing?

I love me some punk tunes. It gets the creative juices flowing! But honestly I pretty much love all genres - bit of a mixed bag, mood depending 😊

Share three pieces of advice for fellow and/or future students?

  1. There’s no such thing as a bad idea
  2. Have fun and fully embrace the course!
  3. Do what you can’t 🤙

Thanks for reading my story!
